Use and Gifting
A Hanukkah menorah that lights up your home throughout the eight days of the holiday and remains an impressive decorative piece on your sideboard or shelf all year round. A perfect gift for Hanukkah, a housewarming, a young couple, a bar or bat mitzvah, clients and employees, and family and friends abroad.
About Hanukkah and the Mitzvah of Lighting the Candles
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated for eight days beginning on the 25th of Kislev, commemorating the Maccabees' victory over the Greeks and the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. According to tradition, a single jar of pure oil was found in the Temple, containing enough oil for just one day, but by a miracle it burned for eight days. To commemorate the miracle, an additional candle is lit each evening, from one candle on the first night to eight on the last, using a ninth candle—the shamash. Before lighting, the blessings “to kindle the Hanukkah lights” and “who performed miracles for our ancestors” are recited; on the first night, the blessing “Shehecheyanu” is also recited. It is customary to place the menorah in the doorway or in a window facing the street, to publicize the miracle—“pirsumei nisa.” A beautiful, thoughtfully designed menorah fulfills the principle of “This is my God, and I will glorify Him,” adorning the mitzvah with beautiful ritual objects.
Candles or Olive Oil?
According to Jewish law, Hanukkah candles may be lit with any oil and wick that produce a good light, but it is especially praiseworthy to use olive oil, in remembrance of the pure olive oil used to light the Temple menorah and the miracle of the oil. The menorah's candle holders are suitable for lighting with oil or candles, according to family custom.
About Light and Transparency
In a crystal Hanukkah menorah, the candlelight does not stop at the body of the menorah but passes through it, refracting and scattering into tiny sparkles. In this way, the menorah itself becomes part of the light—a fitting idea for the Festival of Lights, when the light “increases and grows” each evening, from one candle on the first night to eight on the last.
About the Row of Cups
On this menorah, the eight cups stand in a single straight row at an even height, as Jewish law requires, so that each candle can be seen separately and does not appear as one large flame. The shamash is raised above them in the center, on a polished crystal sphere, and is used to light the other candles. Thanks to its low, elongated shape, the menorah is especially well suited to a windowsill, where it can publicize the miracle to passersby.
