About Hanukkah and the Mitzvah of Lighting the Candles
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated for eight days beginning on the 25th of Kislev, commemorating the Maccabees’ victory over the Greeks and the purification of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. According to tradition, a single jar of pure oil was found in the Temple, containing enough oil for just one day, but through a miracle it burned for eight days. In remembrance of the miracle, an additional candle is lit each evening, from one candle on the first night to eight on the final night, using a ninth candle—the shamash. Before lighting, the blessings “to light the Hanukkah candle” and “who performed miracles for our ancestors” are recited; on the first night, the blessing “Shehecheyanu” is also added. It is customary to place the Hanukkah menorah in the doorway or in a window facing the street to publicize the miracle—“pirsumei nisa.” A beautiful, well-designed Hanukkah menorah fulfills the ideal of “This is my God and I will glorify Him,” enhancing the mitzvah with beautiful ritual objects.
Candles or Olive Oil?
According to Jewish law, Hanukkah candles may be lit using any oil and wick that give a good light, but the preferred way to fulfill the mitzvah is with olive oil, in remembrance of the pure olive oil used to light the menorah in the Temple and of the miracle of the oil. The Hanukkah menorah’s candle holders are suitable for lighting with oil or candles, according to family custom.
About the Design
The Hanukkah menorah features a clean, simple design: a narrow rectangular base with nine candle holders arranged in a single row. The eight candle holders are set at the same height, as Jewish law requires, so that each candle can be seen separately, while the shamash is elevated in the center. Its low, narrow design takes up little space on a windowsill or sideboard and is easy to store after the holiday.
