Uses and Gift Ideas
The “If I Forget You, Jerusalem” tabletop hamsa stand adds beauty to any room and is suitable for the home or office. A wonderful gift from Israel, especially for someone abroad, for a housewarming, or for lovers of Jerusalem and Israel.
About the Hamsa
The hamsa, an open hand with five fingers, is one of the best-known symbols in Jewish homes, especially in North African and Middle Eastern communities. Its name comes from the number five, and it is considered a symbol of protection from the evil eye, as well as a blessing for good luck and abundance. Some associate the five fingers with the Five Books of the Torah, while others cite Jacob’s blessing to Joseph, “Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a well,” as protection against the evil eye. The hamsa is not exclusively a Jewish symbol, but over the generations it has become part of the Jewish home, where it is traditionally hung at the entrance, in a child’s room, or in a place of business.
About “If I Forget You, Jerusalem”
“If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill; may my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you” (Psalm 137) is the vow of the Babylonian exiles, who sat “by the rivers of Babylon” and wept as they remembered Zion. Ever since, it has expressed the Jewish people’s eternal bond with Jerusalem: it is recited at weddings before the breaking of the glass, and every prayer is directed toward the city. The windmill depicted in this piece is the Montefiore Windmill, built in 1857 near Mishkenot Sha’ananim, the first neighborhood outside the walls of the Old City.
About the Artist, Dorit Klein
Dorit Klein is an Israeli Judaica artist, born in Israel to a long-established Jerusalem family. Encouraged by her mother, she began painting at a very young age and worked in commercial graphic design for many years, until her love of Jewish art became her primary pursuit. Since 2003, she has designed and created “Dorit Judaica” in a studio in the courtyard of her home in Petah Tikva. Her designs are distinguished by their vivid, harmonious colors, finely crafted laser-cut metalwork, and the integration of verses, blessings, and prayers from Jewish sources with motifs such as pomegranates, flowers, hamsas, birds, and Jerusalem landscapes.
