Megillat Esther – the story of the miracle, tradition and Jewish faith
Megillat Esther is one of the five scrolls in the Bible and one of the central and most beloved works in Jewish tradition. It is read every year on Purim and tells the story of how the people of Israel were saved from a decree of annihilation in the days of the Persian kingdom. Beyond being a fascinating historical story, Megillat Esther carries deep messages of faith, providence, personal responsibility and Jewish identity.
The historical and cultural background of Megillat Esther
The story of the Megillah takes place in the Persian kingdom during the reign of Ahasuerus (identified by some scholars with King Xerxes I, in the 5th century BCE). The Jews were then living in exile, after the destruction of the First Temple, and were scattered throughout the Persian Empire.
The Megillah tells of Haman the Agagite, the king's viceroy, who plotted to destroy all the Jews in a single day. Thanks to the resourcefulness and courage of Mordechai the Jew and Queen Esther, the decree was overturned and the Jewish people were saved. This is also the origin of the holiday's name: Purim, named after the "pur" – the lot – that Haman cast.
Culturally, Megillat Esther is unique in that God's name does not appear in it explicitly, yet the idea of divine providence is woven into every detail of the story.
Why is it important to read Megillat Esther?
Reading Megillat Esther is a central mitzvah of Purim, and it is meant:
-
To remember the miracle of deliverance of the people of Israel.
-
To strengthen the sense of Jewish unity and identity, even in exile.
-
To emphasize the power of the individual – every person can make a difference and change the course of history.
-
To convey a message of faith and hope, even in times of hidden faces (hester panim).
The Sages ruled that reading the Megillah is an absolute obligation, and every word must be heard, from a kosher scroll written according to halacha.
When is Megillat Esther read?
-
In most cities:
-
First reading – on Purim night
-
Second reading – on Purim day
-
-
In cities walled since the days of Joshua son of Nun (such as Jerusalem):
-
The reading takes place on the 15th of Adar – Shushan Purim
-
The reading is done in public, in the synagogue, but anyone who cannot attend may also read alone, from a kosher Megillah.
Purim customs related to the Megillah
Reading Megillat Esther is part of the full range of holiday customs:
-
Blotting out Haman's name when his name is mentioned in the Megillah.
-
Mishloach Manot – strengthening bonds and friendship between people.
-
Matanot La'Evyonim (gifts to the poor) – an expression of kindness and mutual responsibility.
-
The Purim feast (Seudat Purim) – joy and thanksgiving for the miracle.
A handwritten Megillat Esther – the importance of beauty and quality
The mitzvah of reading the Megillah is fulfilled completely when the reading is done from A kosher Megillat Esther, written in STaM script on parchment with special ink, according to the rules of halacha.
Many scrolls are kept inside An elegant Megillah case, usually made of quality leather, wood or silver, which protects the parchment for years.

Choosing a quality Megillah case is not just a matter of aesthetics – it reflects respect for the mitzvah, protection of the scroll, and tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Megillat Esther – a message for generations
Megillat Esther is not just an ancient story, but a living text that is relevant today as well. It teaches courage, responsibility, faith in providence, and the ability to see light even in times of concealment.
Especially in a modern, changing world, reading the Megillah connects us to our roots, our values and our Jewish identity – and reminds us that every "turnaround" (venahafoch hu) is possible.
