The Pomegranate in Jewish Culture
The pomegranate is one of the Seven Species for which the Land of Israel is praised: “A land of wheat and barley, vines and fig trees and pomegranates.” According to tradition, a pomegranate contains 613 seeds, corresponding to the 613 commandments, and therefore symbolizes abundance, fertility, and good deeds, echoing the words of the Sages: “They are as full of commandments as a pomegranate is full of seeds.” Golden pomegranates adorned the hem of the High Priest’s robe, and pomegranates decorated the capitals of the pillars in the Temple built by Solomon. On Rosh Hashanah, it is customary to eat a pomegranate and bless, “May our merits increase like the seeds of a pomegranate.” To this day, the pomegranate remains one of the most beloved motifs in Jewish art.
About “Good People Along the Way”
“Good People Along the Way” comes from the song “Good People” by Naomi Shemer, one of Israel’s greatest songwriters. The song has become one of the best-known Hebrew phrases for expressing gratitude to people who help, accompany, and lend a hand: friends, teachers, medical teams, volunteers, and colleagues. A pomegranate featuring these words is a lovely way to say thank you.
About the Artist Dorit Klein
