The Pomegranate in Jewish Culture
The pomegranate is one of the Seven Species with which the Land of Israel is blessed: "A land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig trees and pomegranates." According to tradition, a pomegranate has 613 seeds, corresponding to the number of commandments, and is therefore a symbol of abundance, fertility, and good deeds, in the spirit of the sages' saying, "They are as full of commandments as a pomegranate." Golden pomegranates adorned the hem of the High Priest's robe, and pomegranates decorated the capitals of the pillars in the Temple built by Solomon. On Rosh Hashanah, it is customary to eat a pomegranate and say, "May our merits increase like the seeds of a pomegranate." To this day, the pomegranate remains one of the most beloved motifs in Jewish art.
The Tradition of Hanging a Home Blessing
For generations, Jewish communities have had the custom of hanging a blessing at the entrance to the home, asking for peace, joy, health, and livelihood for everyone who lives there and everyone who crosses its threshold. The blessing reminds household members of what truly matters every time they leave and return, and creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere. That is why a Home Blessing is one of the traditional gifts for a housewarming, a young couple, or a family moving into a new home.
About the Artist Dorit Klein
Dorit Klein is an Israeli Judaica artist, born in Israel to a longtime Jerusalem family. She began painting at a very young age, encouraged by her mother, and worked in commercial graphic design for many years, until her love of Jewish art became her primary occupation. Since 2003, she has designed and created "Dorit Judaica" in the studio in the courtyard of her home in Petah Tikva. Her designs are characterized by vivid, harmonious colors, precisely laser-cut metalwork, and the combination of verses, blessings, and prayers from Jewish sources with motifs such as pomegranates, flowers, hamsas, birds, and Jerusalem landscapes.
