Who is Uncle Gerstein?
David (Dodo) Gerstein was born in Jerusalem in 1944. From an early age he showed exceptional artistic talent, and by the age of thirteen he was already participating in art camps in Jerusalem. After military service he began his formal studies in art – at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, then at the cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, at the Art Students League in New York, and finally at St Martin's School of Art in London.
This training – Jerusalem, Paris, New York, London – gave Gerstein a broad and rich artistic foundation that allowed him to develop a completely unique style that combines influences from all corners of the world.
The Unique Style – Israeli Pop Art in 3D
In the late 1970s, Gerstein made a decision that would permanently change his career: He wanted to expand the boundaries of 2D painting to 3D. He began to cut the central figures from his paintings and let them stand in space – without the traditional background, without the usual shabby frame.
Thus was born the style that made him famous: Multilayer metal sculptures in CNC cutting, painted in bold and durable colors with a special varnish coating. Gerstein himself defined his style as "the pop art of the second generation" following Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Vosselman, and David Hockney, but with an entirely unique Israeli personal signature.
The motifs that return in his works are varied and spectacular: Bicyclists on the move, guitarists and musicians, women walking in heels, colorful butterflies, wall clocks, flowers and more. Everyone is caught in in a moment of life – in movement, in joy, in color.

International Achievements – From Singapore to New York
Gerstein is one of the Israeli artists with the broadest international presence. His works have been exhibited in museums and galleries in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Berlin, Rome, Singapore, New York, Taiwan and dozens of other destinations. Its monumental sculptures adorn public squares and open spaces in Israel and around the world.
His best-known public sculpture, Momentum, is the tallest public sculpture in Singapore. His cyclists were acquired by Lance Armstrong – Tour de France champion. His name is also mentioned in Stephen King's writing. In 2016, he was awarded the Taiwan Art Creation Award.
Some of his works have been chosen to appear on huge billboards in Israel for companies like Isracard and the First International Bank – evidence that his art is considered a symbol of Israeli energy, optimism and aesthetics.

Layering: One of Gerstein's secrets is the of the stratification - each piece is constructed from several layers of metal that are placed on top of each other, creating true depth and 3D. When you look from different angles, you see different things.
Durable colors: Painting is done in special printing colors with a very durable varnish coating. The pieces do not fade, do not wear out and retain their colorism for many years to come.
The philosophy of joy: Gerstein himself said: "My art is mainly about the joys and pleasures of life. I want my works to convey a sense of joy and pleasure." This is felt in every piece no heaviness, no sadness. Just life, movement and joy.
