925 Silver vs. Silver Plating – Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Jewelry

One of the most common questions buyers ask before purchasing jewelry is: "Is this real silver?" – and the answer to this question lies in understanding the difference between two types of jewelry that sometimes look completely identical but are fundamentally different: 925 sterling silver versus silver-plated jewelry. The difference between the two is not just a matter of price – it's a matter of quality, durability, and transparency with the customer.

In our 925 sterling silver jewelry collection, you will find only genuine 925 silver jewelry – no plating, no surprises.

What is 925 Sterling Silver?

925 sterling silver is a metal alloy containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The reason 100% pure silver is not used for jewelry is that pure silver is too soft – it would scratch, bend, and lose its shape with everyday use. The addition of copper hardens the silver and increases its durability, without compromising its beauty or luster.

The number 925 indicates the percentage of pure silver out of 1,000 parts – meaning 925 parts out of 1,000 are pure silver. This is the accepted international standard for high-quality silver jewelry, and jewelry that meets this standard must be stamped with 925 – usually on the inside of the ring, on the back of the pendant, or on one of the links of a bracelet.

A Brief History of Sterling Silver

The term "Sterling Silver" originated in 12th-century England. The ancient English currency, the sterling penny, was made of a silver alloy that contained 92.5% pure silver – hence the name of the standard. By the 14th century, all English coinage was required to meet this standard, and gradually 925 became the global standard for high-quality silver in luxury jewelry as well.

For centuries, 925 silver was the preferred material for jewelry, tableware, sacred vessels, and art objects. In Jewish culture, silver is mentioned thousands of times in the Bible and was used to make sacred vessels in the Temple – menorahs, spoons, bowls, and ornaments. Even today, Judaica jewelry from Jewish tradition is often made of 925 silver.

What is Silver Plating?

Silver-plated jewelry is jewelry whose body is made of a completely different metal – usually copper, brass, nickel, zinc, or stainless steel – and on which a very thin layer of silver is applied. The most common plating process is called electroplating, in which the jewelry is immersed in a solution of silver salts and an electric current causes a layer of silver to form on its surface.

The thickness of the plating layer is measured in microns. A standard plating may be only 0.5 to 5 microns thick – a thickness that wears away and crumbles over time. For comparison: a human hair is about 70 microns thick.

Common Plating Methods

Electroplating: The most common method. Silver is deposited on the base metal using an electric current. Relatively fast and inexpensive, but the layer is thin and less durable.

Silver Filled: A higher quality method than electroplating, in which the silver layer is thicker – at least 5% of the total weight of the jewelry. Common in the United States and sometimes used as a substitute for solid silver.

Sheffield Plate: A historical method from the 18th century developed in England, in which a sheet of silver is mechanically bonded to a sheet of copper. Considered higher quality than electroplating, but rarely used today.

German Silver / Nickel Silver: Important to know – despite the name, there is no silver at all in this alloy! This is the name of a nickel-copper-zinc alloy whose color is similar to silver. A misleading term to be wary of.

What are the Practical Differences?

Durability: 925 silver is durable for many years of everyday use. Silver plating, on the other hand, wears off over time – usually within a few months to a few years, depending on the thickness of the plating and the conditions of use. When the plating wears off, the base metal (usually copper) begins to be exposed and leaves green stains on the skin.

Skin Reactions: The base metals in plated jewelry – especially nickel – are common causes of skin allergies. 925 silver is considered skin-friendly and does not cause allergies in most people.

Cleaning and Maintenance: 925 silver can be cleaned and maintained for many years. 925 silver jewelry cleaning solution and a 925 silver cleaning cloth easily restore the jewelry's original luster. Plated jewelry cannot be treated this way – aggressive cleaning may actually wear away the plating layer.

Precious Metal vs. Fashion Jewelry: 925 silver is classified as a "precious metal" – a category that includes gold, silver, platinum, and rhodium. Silver-plated jewelry, on the other hand, is not considered precious metal jewelry – it is classified as "fashion jewelry" or "costume jewelry." The difference is not just semantic: it determines its value, durability, and product status in the eyes of the consumer and in consumer regulations. When you buy plated jewelry, you are buying fashion jewelry – not silver jewelry.

Long-Term Value: 925 silver is a precious metal that has intrinsic value. Plated jewelry, on the other hand, has almost no material value beyond its production cost.

Price: 925 silver is more expensive than silver plating, but the investment pays off in the long run. An inexpensive plated piece of jewelry that wears out within a year will require replacement – while a high-quality 925 silver chain will last you for decades.

How to Identify Real 925 Silver?

Stamp: The simplest and most reliable way – look for the 925, "Sterling" or "STG" stamp on the jewelry. On rings, it is usually on the inside; on pendants, on the back.

Magnet: Silver is not magnetic. If jewelry is attracted to a magnet – it is not real silver. Note: the absence of magnetic attraction is not enough alone, because many other materials are also not magnetic.

Black to Copper: If, with prolonged use, green begins to appear on the skin – this is copper being exposed beneath the plating, not 925 silver.

Weight: 925 silver is relatively heavy. Very light and "hollow-feeling" jewelry may be plated on a light metal.

Price: If the price seems too low to be real silver – it probably isn't. 925 silver has a market price. A very low price is a red flag.

Rhodium Plating – A Special Case

It is important to distinguish between silver plating and rhodium plating. Rhodium plating is a process applied to real 925 silver jewelry – not in its place. Rhodium is a precious metal from the platinum family, and silver jewelry is plated with it to protect it from tarnishing, add luster, and strengthen its surface durability. In other words, a "925 silver with rhodium plating" piece of jewelry is genuine 925 silver jewelry that has received an additional protective layer – this is completely legitimate and even desirable.
