Gold Plating – What exactly is it?

Gold plating is an industrial process where a piece of jewelry made of a cheap metal – copper, brass, nickel, stainless steel – is dipped in a gold solution. An electric current causes a very thin layer of gold to form on the surface of the base metal.

How thin? Between 0.5 and 2.5 microns. For comparison – the thickness of a human hair is 70 microns. This means that the gold layer on plated jewelry is less than 4% of the thickness of a single hair. This is why the plating wears off so quickly.

The result? A piece of jewelry that looks exactly like gold. Gold luster, gold color, luxurious appearance. But after a few months – sometimes weeks of daily wear – the plating starts to wear off. The color fades, the copper is revealed, and characteristic green stains appear on the skin.

Even large fashion brands sell plated jewelry – sometimes at not-so-low prices. They are not technically lying – they just don't emphasize it. "Gold-tone jewelry," "Gold-filled," "Vermeil" – terms that sound good, but none of them are solid 14K gold.

2. Price Check

The price of raw gold is known and transparent. A 5-gram 14K gold necklace contains gold worth only 120-150 shekels (without production cost and profit). A "gold" necklace for 39 shekels? Impossible. If the price is too low to be real – it's probably not real.

3. Magnet Test

Gold and silver are not magnetic. If a piece of jewelry is attracted to a magnet – it is certainly not gold or 925 silver. Note: The absence of magnetic attraction alone is not sufficient proof, but magnetic attraction is definite proof that it is not real.

4. Read the Fine Print

Scroll down the product page. Open "Technical Details" or "Materials." Look for the words: "Gold Plated," "Plated," "Gold Plating," "Silver Plating." If they are there – you know what you're buying.

5. Check the Seller

A reliable seller will clearly state in the product title if it is plated. If you have to dig deep to find this information – that's not a good sign.

6. Ask Directly

"Is this solid 14K gold or plated?" – A simple question that a reliable seller will be happy to answer. A seller who evades or answers evasively – you've already got your answer.

925 Silver – The Exact Same Pitfalls
