A little about the Havdalah ceremony:
Havdalah is a mitzvah performed on the night of Shabbat and Yom Tov. Havdalah is performed by reciting a special blessing over a cup of wine (or grape juice).
The content of the blessing is the distinction between the sacred and the secular, and between the Sabbath and the six days of work, the weekdays, along with the blessing over the wine itself. On the eve of Shabbat, the blessing also includes a blessing over the incense and the fire.
Before the Havdalah or before reciting the blessing "Bora Mini Peshim" each family member can be invited to tell about a good experience they had during Shabbat, which they are taking with them into the new week, or to express some kind of wish for the new week. You can also have a roundtable among family members, in which each member takes turns telling about a historical event or a personality related to the date of one of the days of the week that is beginning.
- At the end of Shabbat, we distinguish between the sacred and the profane, in the "Habadlah" ceremony that we perform over a glass of wine. In the following lines, we will briefly review the main laws we need to know about this subject:
- From sunset to the end of Shabbat, it is forbidden to eat or drink various beverages until one says or hears "Habadlah" after Shabbat ends, but it is permissible to drink only water.
- A person who eats a third meal, and begins his meal before sunset, can continue the meal into the night, but he must also refrain from performing any work that is forbidden on Shabbat, even though Shabbat has already ended, because for him it is still a holy Shabbat.
- To perform a Havdalah, the following items must be prepared: a glass of wine or grape juice, a candle with two or more wicks, and herbs or leaves with a pleasant scent.
- Fill the glass with wine or grape juice (it is customary to fill the glass until the wine overflows a little, as a sign of blessing and abundance) and light the candle, and only then begin to recite the Havdalah text.
- It is customary to recite verses of blessing and success before the Havdalah, "Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid," etc.
- When blessing the wine, "Creator of the fruit of the vine," one should hold the glass of wine in the right hand.
- Then, place the glass down, hold the perfume, myrtle branches, or cloves, or any other fragrant herb in your right hand, and recite the blessing "Bora Mini Parshim." The Sephardic custom of reciting the blessing is based on the type of perfume you are smelling. If it is branches of a tree like myrtle, recite the blessing "Bora Atzi Parshim," if it is fragrant herbs, recite the blessing "Bora Ashbi Parshim," and if it is cloves, etc., recite the blessing "Bora Mini Parshim."
- After the blessing of the incense, they are smelled and placed in order to hold the Havdalah candle, over which the blessing "Creator from the lights of the fire" is recited.
- After the blessing over the candle, it is customary to look at the palms of the hands and fingernails in the light of the candle.
- Hold the candle in the left hand and the glass of wine in the right hand and recite the blessing "He who distinguishes between the sacred and the profane."
- When you finish saying the blessing, you should drink most of the wine in the glass.
- The "Hagfen" and "Hambadil" blessings are said by only one of the participants in the ceremony, usually the head of the family, and all the others listen to his blessings with great attention and respond "Amen" after him. In contrast, the "Breath of the Incense" and "Maori Haash" blessings can be said by each participant in the ceremony themselves, or they can be satisfied with responding "Amen" to the blessings of the one giving the blessing. In addition, each participant must look at the fire after the blessing or after responding "Amen", and also smell the incense after the "Breath of the Incense" blessings.
Please note:
Those who do not have a candle with two wicks can light two matches or two small candles, and bring them close to each other until the flames connect and become one flame, and then recite the blessing "Maori Haash."
If you don't have any fire at all, you can do Havdalah without fire, but you will have to be careful not to bless the 'Lights of the Fire' blessing.
If you don't have perfume, you should also skip the "Creator of the Universe" blessing.
If you did indeed skip the blessing on fire and incense, and then find fire or incense during the evening of Shabbat,
You can and should recite the appropriate blessing over them, even if you have already completed the Havdalah ceremony.
Another important thing to know: Anyone who forgot to distinguish the wine on Shabbat night, or who did not have any wine, can also distinguish it on Sunday and even on Monday and Tuesday.
And another small thing, it is customary for women not to drink the wine of Havdalah, but a woman who lives alone and does not have a man from whom she can hear the Havdalah,
One can and even must perform Havdalah alone and drink the wine.
