On Friday evening, before Shabbat begins, millions of Jews around the world eagerly prepare for this special time. Candle lighting is performed as part of an important ritual carried out in Jewish homes worldwide, also known as "Kabbalat Shabbat."
During this time, the family separates itself from the rest of the week and daily affairs, entering an atmosphere of quiet, calm, and Shabbat serenity.

Candle lighting honors Shabbat and marks its entry in a festive manner.

Blessing for Lighting Shabbat Candles
Before lighting the candles, the following blessing is recited:
"Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha'olam, Asher Kid'shanu B'mitzvotav V'tzivanu L'hadlik Ner Shel Shabbat" (Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the Shabbat candle)
After lighting, it is customary to cover one's eyes and recite a prayer, then open one's eyes and see the light of the candles for the first time.
